First of all, before you go out there and try every treatment for acne scarring that you’ve heard of and jump from one dermatologist to another, it’s very important that you have a proper knowledge about:
- The types of acne scars and what type is yours
- Available acne scar treatments for each type of scarring
We highly suggest that you learn about this information before seeing your doctor or dermatologist which will definitely save you a great deal of time and money.
Types of Acne Scars
According to a clinical evaluation of acne scarring, this skin condition might affect about 95% of patients and it’s highly related to the harshness and interval of acne before treated. Dermatologists discovered that acne scars are also related to family history.
A person with severe acne in her family history is likely to have severe acne. If not treated appropriately soon enough, it can then result in acne scars. Massive surgical treatment and incision can also lead to scarring.
A recent classification system put facial acne scars into three basic types. In other area like the back and chest, usually the scars are either hypertrophic or athropic.
- Ice pick scars
- Boxcar scars
- Rolling scars
- Hypertrophic scars (keloid scars)

Ice pick Acne Scars
These are deep, really narrow scars (less than 2 mm) that continue down into the dermis. The scar is wider at the surface and narrows down at the base, forming a v-shape in cross-section. Usually found on the cheeks and form a group of tiny, deep holes in the skin. They look like wounds from an ice pick.
Because they are usually deep, it’s difficult to get rid of these acne scars using conventional skin resurfacing treatments.
Boxcar Acne Scars
These acne scars have a flat, u-shaped bottom in cross-section. They are wider than ice pick scars and can be round, polygonal, or linear at the skin surface. Boxcar scars can be shallow and only extend into the mid dermis, or can be so deep that they breach to the reticular dermis.
Rolling Acne Scars
When straps of the skin’s tissue grow between the epidermis and deeper layers, they will pull at the skin and create a rolling, wave-like form on the skin’s surface. This is how rolling scars are formed.
Unlike ice pick scars, they are wide (4 – 5 mm) and shallow. They also have a subdermal fibrous tether (subcutaneous fibrous bands) that must be fixed during treatments.
Hypertrophic Scars
Also known as keloid scars, they have a tendency to form on the chest, back, jaw line and ears and are more common in dark-skinned people. They arise when the body overproduces collagen, which triggers the scar to be elevated above the neighboring skin.
Hyperpigmentation
There’s also what we call pigmented scars, which is the result of nodular/cystic acne. Although many patients consider them as acne scars, they are actually not. They are only marks left after acne in a form of discoloration.
The darkening of a skin area is called hyperpigmentation and can be treated with acne scar cream. There are also red marks that stay put after the acne is taken care of; laser treatment can be your best shot for this one.
Acne Scarring Treatments
Please be aware that before getting rid of acne scars, active acne should be taken care of first. Don’t try to eliminate acne scarring when you still have acne!
There is no single therapy that can deal with all types of acne scars. In some situations, a single method can help scarring, but to see rewarding and long-lasting results, most treatments involve a combination of several techniques.
Getting rid of acne scars basically has to do with 3 kinds of techniques: Resurfacing, Fillers and Excision/Subcision. From these three modalities, they have grown to so many acne scar treatments available today:
- Microdermabrasion
- Chemical peels
- Acne Scars Surgery (Excision)
- Dermabrasion
- Laser treatments
- Injections (Acne Scars Fillers)
- Subcision
- Skin Needling
How to Reduce Acne Scars Significantly Without Medical Procedures
We understand that many patients want to reduce the appearance of acne scars as fast as possible, without experiencing serious medical procedures, and without spending a lot of money on expensive treatments.
Well, actually there is a solution for that. You can use an acne scar cream. A good acne scar cream can significantly reduce the appearance of your acne scars, and it only costs you about $50 or so.
Of course it won’t eliminate your acne scars completely -especially if you have deep-pitted scars- but most patients reported a dramatic decrease in the appearance of their acne scars within several days.

How to Prevent Acne Scars
“Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them.” – Einstein
Early and proper treatment of acne is the best way to prevent scarring. Patients who do not treat their acne in the first 3 years have a greater chance to have scars. Stop acne before they produce scars!
In some cases, taking oral antibiotics such as one of the oral tetracyclines can not only control the nodules under the skin, but also help prevent the more noticeable post-inflammatory hyperpigmentaion (PIP) and the more problematical hypertrophic scars and keloid.
Stop Picking!
Acne, pimples, and zits are so tempting to pick and squeeze. Some people even use their fingernails and pins which can only cause permanent damage to the skin.
Another drawback of picking and squeezing is that it will irritate the surrounding skin and trigger new eruptions. Remember, the more inflammation you create, the more likely you are to scar. Treat your acne properly and acne scars will not be your issue…
